Man inside Colorado home attacked by black bear after breaking in with cubs | US News
A black bear attacked a man inside his home after breaking in through a glass sliding door late at night.
The incident occurred in Lake City, a small Colorado town with a population of 400, when an adult female bear and her three cubs entered the man’s home on Thursday night.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife reported that the 74-year-old man attempted to drive the bear out of his house with a kitchen chair, but was instead knocked into a wall and clawed at, sustaining injuries to various parts of his body. He and his wife managed to escape to a bedroom, where medical responders treated him.
Lucas Martin, a Colorado wildlife officer, stated, “It’s fortunate that we did not have a fatality as it was a close call.”
The bear and cubs are believed to have entered the home in search of food.
Recent reports in the area indicated that bears were becoming more comfortable around humans and raiding properties as a result.

Following the attack, state wildlife managers euthanized all four bears, as per protocol for bears that associate humans with food.
Mr. Martin explained, “It’s a challenging situation to address. Unfortunately, mother bears teaching these behaviors to their cubs can lead to ongoing conflicts between bears and humans.”
This incident marked Colorado’s first bear attack report in 2024, following six attacks the previous year.
