Man Suspected in Fatal Shooting of 7-Year-Old Boy on Colorado Tribal Reservation Has Been Apprehended
A man accused of fatally shooting a 7-year-old boy on a tribal reservation in Colorado earlier this month has been apprehended near Monument Valley, Utah, on Tuesday.
The FBI handles serious crimes on the reservation within the Four Corners region, where New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado converge. An arrest warrant for Hight, a member of the Ute Mountain Ute tribe, was issued on Dec. 19 after charges of murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and discharging a firearm during a violent crime were filed against him.
Authorities have not disclosed specific details surrounding the events leading to the shooting, and Hight’s arrest warrant remains sealed. According to the FBI’s wanted poster for Hight, the shooting was described as “targeted at a residence.”
The boy who lost his life has been identified as Zamias Lang, it was stated by Montezuma County coroner George Deavers on Tuesday.
An online fundraiser aimed at covering his funeral expenses described him as a “bright and loving” child.
In a video message following the shooting, tribal chairman Manuel Heart labeled the incident as “senseless” and encouraged the community to allow authorities to conduct their investigation without any acts of retaliation. He also mentioned he was pursuing a resolution requesting the federal government to increase police presence on the reservation and another to prohibit shooting within the reservation’s two communities—Towaoc and White Mesa, Utah.
“We will not tolerate any more incidents where someone gets shot,” he declared.
