Man sustains burns from flaming liquid attack on New York subway | US News

According to police, a man was the victim of a random attack on the New York subway where a cup of flaming liquid was thrown at him, setting his clothing on fire.

The incident took place in lower Manhattan on Saturday afternoon, causing burn injuries to about a third of the man’s body as his shirt was set ablaze.

The 23-year-old is currently in hospital recovering from his injuries, while the suspect has been apprehended, as reported by authorities.

In an interview with the New York Post, the victim mentioned that he shielded his fiancee and cousin from the burning liquid and resorted to slapping himself to extinguish the flames.

He described the attacker as having a cup and creating fire before throwing it at him.

The suspect, a 49-year-old man, was arrested shortly after the incident when police were able to locate him through a phone he allegedly stole from another subway rider, officials stated.

Authorities are also looking into a similar incident that occurred in February where a man tossed a container of flaming liquid at a group of individuals on a subway platform at West 28th Street station.
