Former First Lady Michelle Obama has decided to forgo attending the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
However, her husband Barack Obama will be present on January 20, as indicated in a statement from the former President’s office.
No reason has been provided for Michelle Obama‘s absence from Mr Trump’s inauguration. She also missed the state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter last week.
Bill and Hillary Clinton will be attending the swearing-in ceremony, along with George W Bush and his wife, Laura.
Who might perform at Trump’s inauguration?
Mrs. Obama was the only spouse absent during last Thursday’s funeral service held at Washington National Cathedral, where her husband and Mr. Trump were seated next to each other.
Despite the history of political tension, they were observed having friendly conversations and sharing laughs.
The former First Lady campaigned against Mr. Trump in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 presidential elections, endorsing Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

Mrs. Obama gave a passionate speech in Michigan where she urged men to support the vice president, emphasizing that women’s lives could be jeopardized if Mr. Trump were to reclaim the presidency.
In her 2018 memoir, she criticized Mr. Trump for his campaign against her husband, where he raised questions about Barack Obama’s citizenship.
All three former presidents and their spouses attended Mr. Trump’s inaugural ceremony in 2017.
