Millions of Americans to choose between Trump and Harris for next president | US News
Voters across 50 states are gearing up to cast their votes after a fiercely contested US election campaign, where either Donald Trump or Kamala Harris will become president.
Both candidates have been delivering their final pitches in the last few hours. “The momentum is on our side,” Ms Harris told a crowd in Philadelphia that chanted back, “We will win”.
“Tonight, then, we finish as we started: with optimism, with energy, with joy,” she said, while receiving support from celebrities like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Jon Bon Jovi.
On the other hand, Mr Trump concluded his campaign in Michigan, reiterating key messages about the economy and immigration.
Several states will hold significant importance in determining the election outcome, such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
To win the presidency, the winning candidate needs 270 electoral votes or more, with each state having a different number of votes.
Pennsylvania, with 19 electoral votes, has been the main focus among all swing states.
Both candidates have had a remarkable journey – Mr Trump surviving two assassination attempts and Ms Harris not originally being in the running.
For over a year, the 2024 presidential race seemed set for a rematch between Joe Biden and Mr Trump, until a disastrous TV debate by Mr Biden led to his withdrawal from the ticket.
The Democratic party’s decision to replace Mr Biden with his vice president shifted polls in favor of Ms Harris, albeit narrowly. Many polls are too close to call, with a significant margin of error.

State election officials told Sky News they could have a result as early as 10pm (3am UK time), but it could take several days before a definitive result is reached.
Voters are not only choosing a president, as 10 states will hold abortion-related ballots, some of which could overturn existing restrictions.
