Minnesota’s Ken Martin Elected as DNC Chair, Pledges to Challenge Trump and GOP Policies
Martin committed to emphasizing the needs of working-class voters, strengthening Democratic infrastructure, uniting the party, and opposing Trump and his agenda.
Ken Martin, who has led Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) for many years, was elected as the Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman on Saturday. The party has turned to a seasoned yet low-key strategist from the Midwest to lead its efforts to recover from the challenging election defeat in November.
“We took a hit in November,” Martin said as numerous DNC members gathered in the suburbs of Washington on February 1 to choose their new leader. “It’s time to stand up, brush ourselves off, and re-engage in this fight.”
Having previously served as DNC vice chair, Martin won the chairmanship on the first ballot, receiving 246 votes to surpass Wisconsin’s Ben Wikler in a race that involved 428 total votes.
With this victory, Martin succeeds Jaime Harrison of South Carolina, who declined to seek another term following President Donald Trump’s significant presidential election win. Harrison took to social media to congratulate Martin on his success.
“We need to be proactive,” Martin asserted. “We’re going to fight, take the battle to Donald Trump and the Republicans, and advocate for working people in our party once again.”
Martin’s success in the DNC leadership election will conclude his leadership of the Minnesota DFL.
Former Maryland governor Martin O’Malley and Faiz Shakir, who managed Bernie Sanders’s campaign, were also contenders in the race. Most candidates acknowledged the Democratic brand is facing challenges but proposed minimal structural reforms.
Several prominent Trump supporters, including Elon Musk, Tulsi Gabbard, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., were former registered Democrats or had voted for the party but have since aligned themselves with Trump’s vision for the nation.
