MTV Video Music Awards 2023: Taylor Swift’s Stellar Victory and NSYNC’s Epic Reunion | Latest in Entertainment and Arts
Pop superstar Taylor Swift has once again proved her dominance at the MTV Video Music Awards, taking home the top prize and several other awards. Swift expressed her disbelief as she received the video of the year award for her single “Anti-Hero” from her album “Midnights” released in 2022. She was also named artist of the year, beating out Beyonce, Shakira, and host Nicki Minaj. “Anti-Hero” won the awards for song of the year and best direction, while “Midnights” was named best album. Swift is now closing in on Madonna’s record of 20 VMAs.
Swift’s biggest win of the night was almost overshadowed by a surprise reunion from US boyband NSYNC, who presented her with the best pop video award. Swift expressed her excitement and nostalgia, reminiscing about having NSYNC dolls as a fan. NSYNC last won the award themselves over 20 years ago in 2000. Swift has now won a total of 18 VMAs in her career, just two behind Madonna’s overall record.
Other winners at the MTV VMAs included Ice Spice for best new artist, Nicki Minaj for best hip-hop video, and Shakira and Sean “Diddy” Combs for the Vanguard award for lifetime achievement and the global icon award respectively. The ceremony also celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with performances from Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, and other rap legends. Colombian pop singer Shakira performed a bilingual medley of her hits and thanked her fans for their continuous support. The event also featured performances from Demi Lovato, Lil Wayne, and Olivia Rodrigo.
Additional winners included Blackpink for best group, Stray Kids for best K-pop, SZA for best R&B video, and Maneskin, former Eurovision winners, who won the rock video prize.
