New Course at Yale University Explores Beyonce’s Influence on Politics and Culture | Entertainment and Arts Update
A new course focusing on Beyonce’s artistry is set to launch at Yale University, delving into the “artistic genius” of the global icon.
Titled Beyonce Makes History: Black Radical Tradition History, Culture, Theory & Politics Through Music, the course will commence in the upcoming spring semester.
The module, offered through the humanities and arts department, will specifically analyze Beyonce’s work from her 2013 self-titled album to her latest release, Cowboy Carter.
Notably, the country album received 11 Grammy nominations and solidified Beyonce as the most Grammy-nominated artist in history, with a total of 99 nods.
The course at Yale will also dissect Beyonce’s performance politics and concert films, using them as a lens to explore black intellectual thought and activism.
By critically analyzing Beyonce’s midcareer repertoire, the class will delve into scholarly works and cultural texts spanning black feminist theory, philosophy, anthropology, art history, performance studies, and musicology.
Helmed by writer and black studies scholar Daphne Brooks, the course promises to be a deep dive into Beyonce’s work, marking Brooks’ first opportunity to dedicate an entire lecture series to the artist.

Brooks shared with NBC via email: “I’m excited to delve into her body of work and explore how historical memory, black feminist politics, and philosophies intertwine within the last decade of Beyonce’s performances, along with analyzing her groundbreaking album experiments that enable her to mobilize these themes.”

The course at Yale joins a series of universities offering courses inspired by Beyonce over the past decade. Universities like Rutgers, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Cornell have introduced courses focused on Beyonce’s impact on political activism and feminism.
