New Jersey Sinkhole Closes I-80 Following Collapse into Abandoned Mine
WHARTON, N.J.—On Friday, road crews were actively working to fix a short section of Interstate 80 in northern New Jersey, where a sinkhole had caused the eastbound lanes to close. It remains unclear when these lanes will be reopened.
A guardrail was seen precariously suspended over the large 12-meter sinkhole that formed when an abandoned mine collapsed beneath the highway’s right shoulder on Thursday morning, as reported by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
This incident has forced drivers to navigate a minor detour near Wharton, located approximately 64 kilometers west of New York City.
The crews have stabilized the site and have begun excavation. According to the highway department, they are committed to working around the clock to repair the road.
The reopening of the eastbound lanes will depend on the extent of the necessary repairs and the upcoming weather conditions, according to the department. Drivers are advised to expect delays and consider using alternative routes.
