NYC Mayor Adams Dodges Inquiry on Rejoining the Republican Party
The mayor changed his party affiliation to the GOP from 1995 to 2002 because he felt the Democrats were too lenient on crime.
NEW YORK CITY–Mayor Eric Adams did not dismiss the idea of rejoining the Republican Party when questioned about it on December 6 during a couple of television interviews.
In an interview on NPR’s ‘Morning Edition’, the host inquired, “Would you ever think about rejoining the GOP?”
Adams replied, “The party that matters most to me is the American party; I’m a part of the American party… that’s the party I will always belong to.”
He never firmly declined the idea.
In a following TV interview with PIX11 Morning News, Adams was prompted to elaborate on his earlier comments regarding a potential return to the GOP.
He stated, “We need to move beyond identifying or classifying ourselves as anything other than Americans… Regardless of the party I’m with or the votes I cast, I will always advocate for American values.”

Adams confirmed that he intends to run for mayor again as a Democrat.
He had switched from the Democratic Party to the GOP between 1995 and 2002, citing concerns in a 2013 interview with City Limits magazine that city Democrats were too lenient on crime.
In 2006, he won his election to the New York state Senate as a Democrat.
Adams has been portrayed as cooperative with the upcoming administration. On December 3, he remarked, “I’ve made it clear that I won’t be in conflict with this administration. I’ll work collaboratively with this administration. President Trump is the President-elect, and I look forward to meeting with whoever he appoints to lead his agencies to find ways to improve New York.”
The mayor has announced plans to meet with future border czar Tom Homan next week to discuss Trump’s deportation policies.
Adams has expressed supportive views regarding Trump, including his involvement of Elon Musk in government, during another PIX11 interview in November: “One individual that I think is important to bring on board, though some may disagree, is Elon Musk. We’re facing an outdated government filled with bureaucracy that resists change.”
In the days leading up to Trump’s campaign rally at Madison Square Garden, Adams defended Trump: “I recognize what Hitler has done and what a fascist regime resembles. Trump is not connected to either,” he stated.
Trump has reciprocated with favorable comments about Adams. During the Al Smith Dinner, he mentioned that both had been unjustly targeted by the justice system.
