NYC Mayor Appeals to Public for Assistance in Addressing Increasing Teen Fatalities from Subway Surfing Trend

There have been six fatalities in NYC this year due to a risky social media challenge.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams and other officials are urging residents to contact local law enforcement if they witness individuals attempting to “subway surf” following the deaths of multiple individuals, mainly teenagers, who engaged in this dangerous online trend.

Mayor Adams, alongside NYPD Interim Commissioner Thomas G. Donlon and NYC Public Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos, made a public safety announcement on Oct. 31 outside a NYC school.

The mayor emphasized the importance of calling 911 if anyone is seen attempting this perilous stunt, where individuals ride on the exterior of a moving train.

This warning comes shortly after a 13-year-old girl died and a 12-year-old girl was critically injured while attempting to subway surf together in Queens, as confirmed by police to various media outlets.
Additionally, a 13-year-old lost their life while participating in subway surfing in Queens, and another individual narrowly avoided tragedy after hitting their head in the Bronx, as mentioned by the NYPD Chief of Transit in a post on social media platform X.

In a statement, Adams denounced subway surfing as a fatal entrapment that entices more young people to join the trend after observing others on social media.
