Orange County Shelter Waives Adoption Fees For Large Dogs
OC Animal Care, one of Orange County’s largest municipal animal shelters, is continuing to waive this month’s adoption fees for dogs 25 pounds and over to incentivize adoptions.
Since the shelter started such a promotion in December, adoptions for large dogs have doubled compared to the same time last year.
According to the shelter, 92 dogs of that size were adopted last month compared to 45 in December 2021.
According to OC Animal Care, most of their animals for adoption are large breed dogs, many with medical or behavioral issues.
Last month, officials said, three dogs with such special needs found homes thanks to its fee-waive promotion.
One such dog was “Darling,” who had been at the shelter for eight months, after being rescued off the streets by the county’s animal control.
Adoptions include not only the fee waiver, but include microchipping, vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and an anti-parasite treatment.
However, the promotion does not include licensing fees or puppies six months or younger, according to the shelter.
The adoption promotion is available to residents of any city. With over 400 adoption visits available per week, potential adopters can schedule an appointment by calling the shelter at (714) 935-6848 or dropping by for a walk-in visit.
Walk-ins are available on a first-come, first-served basis as staffing allows, according to the shelter. Those wishing to view animals available for adoption can do so online.
Every Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the shelter spotlights dogs in need of adoption at what officials call ‘Pooches on the Patio,’ where adoptees can interact with the dogs more directly.
