Police investigate incident involving Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill on way to game
Authorities have initiated an internal inquiry following the detainment of NFL star Tyreek Hill on his way to his team’s season opener.
Videos circulating on social media platform X captured the Miami Dolphins wide receiver on the ground, surrounded by police officers near Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Hill, age 30, referred to the incident as “crazy” and was released in time to participate in the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, where the Dolphins secured a 20-17 victory.
During the game, Hill scored a crucial 80-yard touchdown and mimicked being handcuffed as part of his celebration.
The Miami-Dade Police Department is currently reviewing the situation, with Director Stephanie Daniels announcing that one officer involved has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation unfolds.
Spectators of the incident recorded videos on their way to the game, with the footage quickly going viral on social media.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava stated that the internal review will shed light on the actions taken by the officer shown in the public video.
Hill expressed confusion as to why he was handcuffed by the police, emphasizing that he was not disrespectful and is still trying to understand the situation.
Following the game, he revealed that he was stopped for speeding and reckless driving and thanked his teammates for their support during the detainment, commending them for putting themselves at risk to assist him.
One of his teammates, defensive lineman Calais Campbell, stated that police briefly handcuffed him when he intervened to de-escalate the confrontation.
Campbell criticized the use of “excessive force” on Hill, dubbing the incident as “extreme”.
Hill highlighted the placement of an officer on administrative duties as indicative of the situation and expressed his respect for law enforcement, confirming his desire to become a police officer post-retirement from football.
He conveyed his confusion over the handcuffing incident, stating his compliance and lack of disrespect towards the officers involved.
Reflecting on his status as an NFL star, Hill pondered on the potential outcomes had he not been recognized, questioning the motives behind the police actions.
He emphasized the importance of following instructions in such situations, mentioning advice from his uncle to listen and cooperate.

Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, expressed concern over the escalation of the situation and vowed to investigate the matter to ensure Hill’s well-being and address any issues that arose during the detainment.
Rosenhaus refrained from making allegations but highlighted the distress experienced by Hill following the incident.
The Miami Dolphins issued a statement confirming Hill’s detainment in a traffic incident near the stadium, assuring his safe arrival for the game with support from his teammates.
