Police Probe Subway Platform Shooting That Forced Harvard Students to Shelter in Place

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Boston transit police are currently investigating a shooting that took place on a subway platform at Harvard University on Sunday. This incident led to the school issuing a shelter-in-place order for both students and staff.

In response, authorities re-routed subway passengers to shuttle buses as officers from multiple departments searched for the suspect involved.

Richard Sullivan, superintendent of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority Transit Police Department, stated in an email that an armed man discharged four to five rounds at a “targeted individual” on the southbound platform of the Harvard Square station, according to initial investigations. The shooter then fled the scene.

There are currently no reported injuries to the targeted individual or anyone else, he added.

Police received reports of gunfire around 2:15 p.m. A subsequent message was sent out to the Harvard community, advising individuals to seek shelter in the closest building until further notice. Officers are actively searching the vicinity of the busy station, situated near Harvard’s main campus in Cambridge.

The shelter-in-place alert, which had been posted on Harvard’s website, was later removed Sunday afternoon.
