Poll Shows Harris as Democrats’ Leading Candidate for 2028 Presidential Election

41 percent of Democrats indicated that they would support Kamala Harris in a future presidential run.

In a recent survey conducted on Nov. 20, Vice President Kamala Harris emerged as the top choice among potential Democratic candidates for the 2028 presidential race, despite losing to President-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

The poll released by Puck News/Echelon Insights revealed that 41 percent of Democratic respondents would choose Harris as the party’s nominee for the 2028 election. Following Harris were California Gov. Gavin Newsom at 8 percent and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro at 7 percent. Shapiro was previously considered a top contender for Harris’s running mate before she ultimately chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Walz and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg tied for fourth place at 6 percent each.

Although Trump won the Electoral College and was leading in the popular vote, Harris maintained strong support among Democrats for the 2028 race. Other potential Democratic candidates included Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and several other governors and senators.

A significant portion of respondents remained undecided on their preferred candidate, while a small percentage favored a different choice.

Although Harris faced challenges in the 2020 primary and criticisms from some Democrats regarding her campaign strategy, she garnered strong support in the recent poll. On the Republican side, Vice President-elect JD Vance emerged as a favored candidate for the 2028 nomination, followed by Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley.

Overall, the survey highlighted the potential contenders for the 2028 presidential race and provided insights into voter preferences among likely participants.

The survey involved 1,010 likely voters and was conducted from Nov. 14–18, with a margin of error of 3.5 percent.
