Republicans Criticize Super Bowl Performances by Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, and Janet Jackson as ‘Vulgar,’ Advocating for More ‘Family-Friendly’ Entertainment | Entertainment & Arts News
A group of critics has expressed that this year’s Super Bowl half-time show should be more “family-friendly,” following what they characterize as “vulgar” performances in the past by artists such as Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna, as well as the notorious “wardrobe malfunction” involving Janet Jackson.
Republican politicians and campaigners from Louisiana have sent a letter to the event’s organisers voicing their “serious concerns” as the Super Bowl approaches, which is planned to occur at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans this February.
Grammy-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar is set to headline the half-time show.
In a letter signed by 17 Republican lawmakers from Louisiana and 15 pro-family organizations, critics highlighted Lopez‘s performance alongside Shakira in Florida in 2020, mentioning her “minimal clothing” and moments when she was “groped by male and female dancers on stage,” along with her “sexually suggestive gestures and performance on a stripper pole.”
Critics also condemned Rihanna‘s performance during the 2023 half-time show in Arizona – when she announced her pregnancy – stating she was seen “groping herself” while singing lyrics “so offensive that few Louisiana adults could read those lyrics in front of an audience without shame.”
The letter further remarked: “While these past vulgar performances might have been tolerated in the states where those Super Bowls were held, such lewd acts are unacceptable for children in Louisiana, objectify women, and are simply NOT embraced by most parents in the state.”
