Republicans suggest renaming Dulles airport in honor of Donald Trump

A group of House Republicans have introduced a bill proposing to rename the international airport near central Washington DC after Donald Trump.

Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania, who holds the position of the Republican party’s chief deputy whip in the House, is among the seven sponsors of the bill to rename Dulles airport.

He believes renaming the airport to Trump International Airport would symbolize freedom, prosperity, and strength, but Democrats argue that naming a federal prison after the former president would be more fitting.

Due to the Democrat majority in the Senate and the slim Republican majority in the lower house, the bill is unlikely to become law.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Mr Reschenthaler expressed that naming the airport after Trump would be a powerful representation as millions of travellers arrive in America.

In response to the proposal, Democrat Gerry Connolly suggested naming a federal prison after Mr Trump due to criminal charges he currently faces.

The proposal aims to replace the current name of the airport, which honors John Foster Dulles, with “Donald J Trump International Airport.” Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia is located approximately 27 miles from the White House.

Another airport in Virginia is already named after Republican president, Ronald Reagan.

In a past incident in July 2019, Mr Trump was criticized for falsely claiming that American troops took over airports during the revolutionary war in the 1700s, despite the absence of air travel in the US at that time.

Former Republican politician Cheri Jacobus once labeled Trump as “criminally stupid” for his inaccurate historical claims.
