Riverside Stem Academy Receives Recognition as Top High School in California
The Riverside Stem Academy in Riverside, California, topped the list of high schools in the state this year according to a study by U.S. News & World Report. The school, which focuses on science, math, and technology, graduates all of its students.
Located about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, the Riverside Stem Academy serves grades five through 12 and has about 660 students. It opened in 2011 and is one of 12 high schools in the Riverside Unified School District.
The Riverside Stem Academy was also ranked No. 10 overall in the U.S. and boasts a 98 percent Advanced Placement participation rate. According to the U.S. News & World Report survey, the school is the top high school in California.
Students at the Riverside Stem Academy have a strong focus on technology, with a curriculum that emphasizes research, project-based learning, and design. The school reported that 82 percent of students were proficient in math and 87 percent in reading based on state test scores.
The school’s graduation rate is 100 percent, with 94 percent of students being deemed “college ready.” Riverside Stem Academy ranked first in state testing both nationally and in California, as well as fifth in the state for college readiness and 81st in the U.S.
Before graduating from a California high school, students must complete a minimum of 13 state-mandated courses, including three years of English, two years of math, and two years of science. They are also required to take Smarter Balanced assessments in English language arts and math.
