San Diego County Agency to Provide 10,000 Air Purifiers in Response to Tijuana River Crisis
SAN DIEGO—In response to the odors impacting South Bay residents due to the ongoing Tijuana River Valley pollution crisis, the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District announced plans on Wednesday to distribute 10,000 air purifiers and filters.
These purifiers will alleviate odors attributed to hydrogen sulfide and are meant to serve as a short-term solution while the International Boundary and Water Commission and associated entities work on long-term fixes, including the repair and expansion of a wastewater treatment facility.
“No one should have to inhale contaminated air in their own home,” stated SDAPCD Board member and County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer. “This significant initiative to provide air purifiers brings relief to families most affected by the Tijuana River crisis—supporting 10,000 households in safeguarding their health, as we continue our pursuit of clean air and water for our community.”
Due to the limited supply of air purifiers, SDAPCD will give priority to households with children and individuals 65 and older, as well as to communities nearest the Tijuana River. Residents in the San Diego neighborhoods of Otay Mesa West, San Ysidro, Egger Highlands, Nestor, Tijuana River Valley, and the city of Imperial Beach are eligible.
Eligible households must register at sdapcd.org to receive the air purifier by mail. The air pollution district will also conduct several distribution events.
“The Air Improvement Relief Effort program is part of SDAPCD’s ongoing initiative to tackle the Tijuana River Valley crisis,” said Paula Forbis, SDAPCD air pollution control officer. “We recognize that this complex issue is affecting the quality of life in South Bay communities, and our aim with this program is to provide some relief to those most adversely affected by the odors.
“We will strive to distribute the air purifiers promptly, but we kindly ask for the public’s understanding as we process applications,” she concluded.
