San Diego’s Minimum Wage to Rise to $17.25 Per Hour

SAN DIEGO—Starting January 1, 2025, workers earning minimum wage in San Diego will enjoy an increase in their earnings, with the hourly rate rising from $16.85 to $17.25.

The city’s minimum wage surpasses California’s minimum wage, which is set to rise to $16.50 this Wednesday.

“This achievement is the result of years of dedicated effort and advocacy to provide more financial relief to hardworking San Diegans,” stated Mayor Todd Gloria. “By increasing the minimum wage, we are assisting working families in coping with the increasing costs of living and helping them make ends meet more effectively.”

This adjustment is part of the Earned Sick Leave and Minimum Wage Ordinance enacted in 2016. The city’s minimum wage has been incrementally raised since 2019 in line with the previous year’s cost of living adjustment.

As a reminder, tips and gratuities do not contribute to the minimum wage. Employees will continue to accrue sick leave, which can be utilized for personal medical appointments or to care for a family member, although it is not restricted solely to those situations. Employers may limit sick leave usage to 40 hours per employee each benefit year.

All employers are required to post minimum wage notices prominently at their workplaces or job sites.
