Reports from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation indicate that at least four individuals have lost their lives and nine others have sustained injuries in a tragic school shooting incident in the United States.
The heartbreaking event occurred at Apalachee High School, located in Winder within Barrow County, approximately 50 miles away from Atlanta.
A suspect is currently in custody, as confirmed by the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office through a statement.
Law enforcement officers were alerted to the active shooting just before 9.30am local time, prompting a swift response from multiple agencies dispatched to the high school.
Initially placed on lockdown, the school has since been cleared with students now reunited with their families.
Witnesses describe a chaotic scene as police swarmed the campus and students sought refuge in the football stadium.
One teacher, Camille Nelms, shared harrowing details of the moment gunfire erupted in her classroom, causing panic and fear among those present.
The incident sparked a stampede, according to reports from local media.
Sheriff Jud Smith of Barrow County initially reported to the press that multiple individuals had sustained gunshot wounds at Apalachee High School, highlighting the ongoing and evolving nature of the investigation.
He described the situation as an “evil” act unfolding before them, conveying condolences to the affected community, school system, students, and parents.
Governor Brian Kemp intervened, allocating state resources to aid in the response to the tragic incident and urging citizens to pray for the safety of those in classrooms across the state.
Federal agencies such as the FBI and ATF have also mobilized to the scene in response to the shooting.
