Schumer Reelected as Senate Democratic Leader, Durbin Appointed Whip

Starting in January, Schumer and Durbin will assume the roles of Senate minority leader and minority whip, respectively, as the GOP takes control of the upper congressional chamber.

On December 3, Senate Democrats re-elected Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) to continue serving as their leader and whip.

Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) will take on the roles of the third and fourth-ranking members of the Senate Democratic leadership.

Klobuchar is set to chair her party’s Policy and Communications Committee, while Booker will lead the Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee, a position Klobuchar previously held.

According to the Senate Democrats website, the Steering and Outreach Committee is “dedicated to fostering dialogue between Senate Democrats and leaders from across the nation.”

The website states that the Policy and Communications Committee serves as “an advisory board to the Democratic Leadership and functions as a research, policy-formulating, and communications arm of Senate Democrats.”

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) will take over from Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) as chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which is responsible for the party’s Senate campaign and financial initiatives.

Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) have been elected as vice chairs of the Democratic Conference.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who collaborates with the Democrats, has been appointed outreach chairman, with Sen. Catherine Cortez-Masto (D-Nev.) serving as outreach vice chair.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) has been elected secretary of the conference, while Sens. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) will serve as deputy conference secretaries.

All leadership positions were uncontested.

Schumer has represented New York in the Senate since 1999 and has been in Congress since 1981.

Durbin has been a member of Congress since 1983 and has served in the Senate for the past 27 years.

As the GOP takes control of the upper congressional chamber beginning in January, Schumer and Durbin will hold the positions of Senate minority leader and minority whip, respectively.

Both Schumer and Durbin held the roles of Senate majority leader and Senate majority whip, respectively, from January 2021. Durbin also served in this role from 2007 to 2015.

Klobuchar and Booker have been serving in the Senate since 2007 and 2013, respectively.

Last month, Senate Republicans elected their leadership, with Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) as majority leader, Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) as majority whip, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) as conference chairman, and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) as the chair of the party’s Policy Committee, with Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) as its vice chair.
