Secret Service Agent Discharges Weapon Near Yellen’s Home in Washington, D.C.
A U.S. Secret Service (USSS) agent discharged their weapon near Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s residence after confronting individuals attempting to break into vehicles, the agency reported on Tuesday.
“Around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a U.S. Secret Service special agent on a protective detail in the 2900 block of Stephenson Place NW noticed a sedan with several occupants trying to open car doors along the road,” Guglielmi said. “As the sedan approached, a confrontation ensued between the agent and the individuals in the vehicle. The agent fired their service weapon, yet to date, there is no evidence that anyone was hit.
“The suspects fled the scene in the sedan, prompting local law enforcement to be alerted. There was no danger to any protectees during this occurrence, and no protectees were harmed.”
The Metropolitan Police Department Internal Affairs Division’s Force Investigations Team is currently looking into the incident, as it reviews all officer-involved shootings in Washington, D.C.
It remains uncertain if Yellen, 78, was present in her home at the time of the occurrence.
Yellen, who was nominated by President Joe Biden in 2020, has been serving as treasury secretary since January 2021. Prior to this role, she was the chair of the Federal Reserve.
In November of last year, Secret Service agents assigned to protect Naomi Biden, the president’s granddaughter, discharged their weapons at three individuals in Washington’s Georgetown area while witnessing an attempted carjacking of an unmarked government SUV.
