Seven Injured, Three Critically, Following Suspected Gas Explosion at Popular Resort in Hawaii | US News
According to police and footage, seven individuals have sustained injuries from a suspected gas explosion at a well-known beach resort in Hawaii, with three in critical condition.
The injured individuals are aged between 18 and 74 following the explosion that occurred Thursday night in a barbecue grill area at The Whaler.
This explosion resulted in significant debris at the Kaanapali Beach resort, a favored tourist destination near Lahaina, which was almost entirely devastated by a deadly wildfire in 2023.
The Maui Police Department reported that no one was evacuated from the vicinity due to the explosion.
Initial investigations suggest that liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly used in barbecue grills in the resort’s shared area, may have contributed to the explosion, according to the police.
Social media videos of the scene capture the explosion occurring outdoors near a swimming pool, sending debris flying toward the beach area.

The Whaler confirmed that the explosion took place at its Tower One barbecue area and stated it is “actively collaborating with the fire department to investigate the matter.”
“The safety and well-being of our owners, guests, and team members is our highest priority,” the resort emphasized.
Authorities mentioned that the official cause of the explosion is still under investigation, with witnesses suggesting “a potential malfunction of the grill” prior to the incident.
