Sheriff’s Office Finds No Evidence Supporting Woman’s Allegation of Her Father as a Serial Killer

Galina Trefil asserts that her father spoke of killing various individuals from the 1970s to the 1990s.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office in Northern California announced that it investigated claims from a woman who indicated through several social media posts that her father is a serial killer, but found no supporting evidence for the allegations.

The sheriff’s office confirmed on March 17 the social media claims made by Galina Trefil, which were circulated by numerous users, alleging that her 86-year-old father, Jon Charles Trefil, is a serial killer, according to a public statement.

The office noted that it had been informed of the allegations two years earlier when the woman first reported her suspicions to other local and regional law enforcement agencies.

In January 2023, detectives reached out to Galina Trefil, her representative, and her father after becoming aware of the claims. The sheriff’s office gathered recordings, scanned journals, and various other investigative materials, including photographs, copies of journal entries, and recordings of discussions involving Jon Trefil, Galina Trefil, and the advocate.

During a meeting in February 2023, Galina Trefil alleged that her father mentioned murdering several individuals between the 1970s and 1990s. She also provided detectives with an extensive written statement.

Galina Trefil began her investigation into unsolved murders in Mendocino County, including one from the 1970s, which she claims her father, who is in declining health, confessed to committing.

Investigators found that a DNA sample was submitted for analysis to the Department of Justice in 2006, which indicated an unknown male linked to the case from the 1970s. Given the consistencies between Galina Trefil’s statements and the unsolved homicide case from that decade, detectives sought a warrant to collect Jon Trefil’s DNA for comparison purposes.

A judge in Mendocino County approved a search warrant in May 2023 to obtain a DNA sample from Jon Trefil to compare with the DNA profile derived from evidence surrounding the 1970s homicide. His DNA was submitted to the California Department of Justice Bureau of Forensic Services and entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

However, Jon Trefil’s DNA did not match the unknown male associated with the unresolved murder case from the 1970s. His DNA profile was incorporated into CODIS for future comparisons with DNA profiles generated during investigations of unsolved cases, but the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has not received any notifications regarding matches or potential matches.

Galina Trefil also alleged that her father buried multiple individuals at a cabin in Comptche, California. The sheriffs reported that they found no evidence, human remains, or burial sites on the Comptche property.

She further claimed that her father recognized other serial killers, though these assertions have not been validated by detectives, according to the sheriff’s office. The diaries and journals of Trefil did not contain any murder confessions, the office stated.

The sheriff’s office has not interviewed Jon Trefil concerning the allegations due to his health condition and because his family indicated he would not cooperate with law enforcement.

“When legally justified and supported by probable cause, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office will continue to investigate this matter,” the office stated.

In her social media posts, Galina Trefil identifies herself repeatedly as the daughter of a serial killer and claims her father confessed to torturing nearly a dozen victims in the early 1980s while working at Ukiah Hospital as they were patients. She alleges he withheld anesthesia from them when it was needed.

“They writhed. They cried. He watched,” she posted on Facebook, also asserting that her mother was aware of the torture but did not report it. Additionally, she claims her mother possessed human skulls that she kept in her classroom while teaching elementary school.

Moreover, she alleges that 30 years ago, her father submerged the body parts of several women in a body of water in Albion, California.

“The DA’s Office is aware of John’s confessions regarding the pond—specific locations where he claims the girls are,” she stated in her social media updates.

She also mentioned that her father has been a subject of investigation by various authorities since 1962.

“None have managed to apprehend him up to this point. I am doing what I believe is morally necessary to make sure they have what they require to capture him,” she wrote. “I will not cease until they do.”
