Shooting at North Carolina College Results in 1 Fatality and 6 Injuries

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C.—A shooting incident at a small college in eastern North Carolina resulted in one fatality and six injuries, prompting a lockdown on campus early Sunday, according to university officials.

The incident took place in the heart of Elizabeth City State University’s campus after Yard Fest, the concluding event of the historically Black university’s weeklong Viking Fest celebration, as stated by the institution.

A 24-year-old male, who was not a student, was declared dead. His identity has not been disclosed yet, pending family notification, the statement indicated.

Among those injured, four sustained gunshot wounds; three of them were students. Additionally, two other students were hurt in the ensuing chaos. Fortunately, none of the injuries are reported to be life-threatening. All injured individuals were transported to a hospital for care, according to the statement.

A call made to campus police was redirected to a university spokesperson, who did not respond immediately to the message.

“The university is profoundly saddened by this senseless act,” the institution stated in an earlier announcement.

Following the incident, the lockdown was lifted, and the university heightened security measures across campus as a precaution. However, access to the central campus area remained restricted later on Sunday.

The university hosts approximately 2,300 students and is situated about 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia.
