Son Charged with Murder After Attempting to Drop Off Father’s Body, Says NY Sheriff
GENESEO, N.Y.—Authorities report that a man from upstate New York has been charged with murder after attempting to deliver his father’s bullet-riddled corpse to a sheriff’s office.
Richard Fluegel Jr., 30, contacted 911 late Monday, claiming he wanted to surrender a body at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office in Geneseo, according to Sheriff Thomas Dougherty.
“Receiving a call from someone wishing to turn in a deceased body is highly unusual,” Dougherty stated at a news briefing on Tuesday.
Deputies met Fluegel in the parking lot, where they discovered the deceased Richard Fluegel Sr., aged 60, in his son’s vehicle, having succumbed to gunshot injuries, Dougherty clarified.
The elder Fluegel had been reported missing the previous Sunday, according to the sheriff.
Initially, Fluegel Jr. was taken into custody on a charge of tampering with evidence but was subsequently charged with murder and criminal use of a firearm. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment late Tuesday and is currently being held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 16.
The investigation is still in progress, and investigators have yet to disclose the specifics of how or when they suspect Fluegel took his father’s life.
At this time, there is no attorney listed for Fluegel in court documents, and the district attorney’s office has not provided information regarding his legal representation.
Dougherty aimed to reassure residents that Livingston County, located in New York’s Finger Lakes region, remains a safe area.
“These incidents are rare,” he commented. “It’s uncommon for someone to just arrive and claim to have a deceased body they wish to surrender.”
