Swing-state Voters React to Trump’s Conviction After Allegations by Stormy Daniels at Nevada Resort
Donald Trump’s conviction is indeed historic, but will it impact his chances of winning the presidential election?
There are few better places to ask that question than America’s gambling capital, Nevada, which is also one of the swingiest states in the country.
Trump latest: ‘The real verdict will be on November 5th’
The past four election cycles have favored the Democratic Party here, but between 1960 and 2000, it was predominantly Republican.
If Trump wants to defeat President Biden in November, he will need to gain support in places like this.
‘I wouldn’t have him over for a beer, but I’d have him in the White House’
In Cal Neva casino, on the main strip in Reno, I meet Keith, a retired lorry driver and a staunch Trump supporter.
When asked if the former president’s conviction has swayed his support, he responds, “Not at all. I’m still backing Donald Trump. I believe this entire affair has been a farce, a sham trial. I feel ashamed for our country.”
While he confesses to disliking Donald Trump’s “personality” and believes the businessman engages in public conflicts too frequently, Keith states, “He talks a big game. I wouldn’t socialize with him or go to a pub together. But this is about business and the presidency, so absolutely, I’d support him in the White House.”
‘This country loves people who are the bad guy’
Playing the gaming machines, Eric, on holiday from Washington state, is undecided on his vote but believes Trump is a strong contender for the presidency once again.
“I’m mentally preparing for his return to office,” he expresses. “I think he’ll garner more support now than before. This nation admires those seen as villains. He’s so controversial, and that’s what led to his victory initially.”
When questioned about the possibility of Donald Trump receiving a prison sentence for his crimes, Eric speculates, “If he is incarcerated, it would likely be in a minimum-security facility. He wouldn’t be in a high-security prison. I actually feel sorry for his secret service agents, as that would be a challenging assignment.”
