Texas AG Ken Paxton Launches Campaign for US Senate, Taking on Fellow Republican Sen. John Cornyn
The campaign of Cornyn swiftly reacted to Paxton’s announcement regarding his Senate ambitions.
On Tuesday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton declared his intention to compete for the U.S. Senate during the 2026 primary, aiming to challenge his fellow Republican, Sen. John Cornyn, who is currently serving his fourth term.
He committed to backing Trump’s legislative goals in Washington, which include tax reductions, border security, halting the weaponization of the government, and “draining the Swamp.”
Cornyn’s campaign promptly criticized Paxton’s Senate bid, labeling him “a fraud” and referencing his impeachment trial. Cornyn, 73, has been a U.S. Senator since 2002 and has indicated his desire to seek a fifth term.
Former President Trump has previously voiced support for both Paxton and Cornyn. Notably, Democrats have not triumphed in a Senate election in Texas since 1988.
