Texas Sheriff’s Deputy Killed, Suspect Shot Dead Following Extensive Search in Houston
HOUSTON—On Wednesday, a man fatally shot a sheriff’s deputy in a shopping plaza in Houston, followed by a lengthy pursuit during which he evaded capture for hours. The suspect later shot a K-9 that assisted officers in locating him hiding under debris in a dumpster, according to officials.
The 56-year-old suspect was ultimately shot and killed by law enforcement, concluding a comprehensive afternoon search in Texas’s largest city after the death of Jesus Vargas, a 17-year veteran of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department.
“The events that have transpired are profoundly tragic,” stated T. Michael O’Connor, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Texas, at a press briefing.
The K-9, named Rocky, was airlifted for medical treatment and was reported to be in stable condition by Wednesday evening, O’Connor noted.
Authorities reported that Vargas was attempting to execute an arrest warrant Wednesday morning when the suspect opened fire. Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, prompting an extensive search involving helicopters, canine units, and multiple law enforcement agencies.
The suspect was identified as Robert Lee Davis, also known as Sean Christopher Davis. Davis was wanted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, as stated by Houston Police Department Chief Noe Diaz.

Law enforcement stated the suspect was located near the site where the deputy was shot. Chief Diaz explained that the K-9 led officers to the dumpster and it was believed that Davis had been hiding there since the shooting. Officers returned fire after Davis shot the dog, officials reported.
Vargas was a married father of three, as noted by Brazoria County Sheriff Bo Stallman.
