The Trial of the Doomsday Murders: A Gripping Saga of Sex, Money, and Dark Spirits | US News
Self-styled prophet Chad Daybell warned of an impending apocalypse and spoke of dark spirits, but prosecutors allege that his true motivations were centered around desires for sex, money, and power.
Daybell has now been sentenced to death after being found guilty of triple murder. Following a unanimous decision by a jury in Idaho, the death penalty was deemed an appropriate resolution in this case.
In 2017, Daybell prophesied a doomsday scenario involving a massive earthquake in his book. Two years later, five individuals connected to him, including two children, were deceased.
Through two murder trials, a complex narrative of lies and twisted beliefs emerged surrounding Daybell and his partner Lori Vallow. Both were convicted of the murders of two of Vallow’s children, with Daybell also found guilty of killing his first wife, Tammy.
Vallow, now Daybell’s second wife, is currently serving a life sentence in prison.
Daybell and Vallow labeled anyone opposing them as “dark spirits” or “zombies,” creating a distorted reality that justified their actions in eliminating them, according to prosecutors. They portrayed Daybell as a simple author manipulated by Vallow when he had the opportunity to pursue what he believed was his rightful destiny.
Followers of Daybell were engulfed in a world of zombies and spirits, leading to the tragic discovery of two buried children in his backyard.
Daybell and Vallow first met at a religious conference in St. George, Utah in October 2018, where Daybell’s apocalyptic themes caught Vallow’s attention. Their flirtation led to an affair, eventually resulting in the deaths of several individuals close to them under mysterious circumstances.
Their relationship escalated quickly, with Daybell claiming to be the reincarnation of a biblical figure and Vallow his wife from a past life. Their spouses at the time soon met tragic fates, leading to suspicions surrounding the couple’s involvement.
