What to expect on election day?

Voters will head to the polls and cast their votes, with around half of registered voters expected to have already voted before 5 November, according to a poll conducted by NBC News.

Most have voted by mail, but there is also the option to vote early in person in some states.

For those who haven’t voted yet on election day, polls open early in the morning in each state and close in the early evening.

Americans do not directly vote for the president and vice president. Instead, they vote for “electors,” who are members of the Electoral College, and these electors back their chosen candidates for the roles.

With a total of 538 electors across the US, each state has a number of electors based on its population. This means states like California, with a large population, have 54 Electoral College votes, while states like North Dakota, with a smaller population, have only three votes.

The candidate who reaches 270 Electoral College votes first wins the presidency.

In the last election, Joe Biden won by 306 votes to Mr. Trump’s 232.
