Timothée Chalamet and Demi Moore Among SAG Awards Winners: Key Indicators for the Oscars | Entertainment & Arts News
The winners of this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) have been announced, serving as a significant indicator for the Oscars just a week away.
Demi Moore achieved a remarkable victory, winning best actress for her role in the body horror film The Substance, while Timothee Chalamet received the best actor award for his performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
While it wasn’t entirely unexpected, prior to this, Adrien Brody had been considered a frontrunner for an Oscar win for his role in the post-war film The Brutalist.
This year’s competition is closer than it has been in recent years, with both Chalamet, 29, and Moore, 62, on track to potentially win their first Academy Awards.
After winning a BAFTA earlier this month, the papal thriller Conclave was awarded the top film prize for best ensemble.
Featuring Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini, and Stanley Tucci, the film delves into the drama surrounding the selection of a new pope.
During the ceremony, Rossellini expressed the cast’s thoughts and wishes for Pope Francis, who is currently hospitalized due to pneumonia and bronchitis, hoping for his swift recovery.
In other categories, the supporting roles aligned with the trends of the 2025 awards season—Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldana claimed victories for their roles in A Real Pain and Emilia Perez, respectively.
‘I want to be one of the greats’
The awards, voted on by members of the SAG-AFTRA union, are a celebration of actors recognized by their peers.
Upon hearing his name called for best male actor, Chalamet appeared genuinely surprised.
“This has been five-and-a-half years of my life. I put everything I had into portraying the incomparable Mr. Bob Dylan—truly an American hero,” he stated on stage. “It was a lifetime honor to play him.”
He openly expressed his ambitions, stating, “I am truly in pursuit of greatness. I know it’s not commonly said, but I aspire to be one of the greats.”
Moore shared that joining SAG-AFTRA as a teenager in 1978 provided her direction as “a kid on my own who had no blueprint for life.”
Actress and activist Jane Fonda, 87, delivered a powerful political message as she received a lifetime achievement award.
“We are experiencing our documentary moment,” she declared. “This is it. And it’s not a rehearsal.”
She emphasized that the term “woke” simply signifies caring about others.
The TV winners
The SAG Awards also recognize television achievements, with the historical drama Shogun receiving the award for best ensemble, while its stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai were honored as best actor and actress.
Only Murders In The Building secured the prize for best comedy ensemble, with Martin Short awarded as the best actor in a comedy series.
Jean Smart, who had previously advocated for the cancellation of awards shows due to the wildfires that affected Los Angeles in January, was named best actress in a comedy for her role in Hacks. Although she did not attend, she provided a recorded message.
In the limited series category, British actress Jessica Gunning was honored as best actress for Baby Reindeer, while Irish actor Colin Farrell took home the title of best actor for The Penguin.
