Tooth Fairy Spoils Kids with $100 Bills and Designer Jewellery in UK
Children are now receiving more extravagant gifts from the tooth fairy, with some getting $100 bills and designer jewelry under their pillows. The US national average for a tooth fairy gift has risen from under $2 in 2001 to more than $6 in 2023, according to polling by Delta Dental. However, some parents have revealed that they give even more lavish gifts to their children.
Former dentist Mark Burhenne, who runs AsktheDentist.com, said that some children receive “cash, a video game, sometimes an iPhone,” attributing this to parents competing with each other. One parent from the UK, Chidera Nig, gave her daughter £60, a letter, a silver fairy necklace, and a Louis Vuitton bracelet, which her husband had bought when their daughter was born.
Ms. Nig stated, “That was her first baby tooth that she lost, and the process was uncomfortable for her, so we decided to give her the extra tooth fairy experience. Childhood goes by so fast, and we believe in cherishing every moment, celebrating milestones, and creating long-lasting memories.”
Generous gifts from the tooth fairy can lead to children comparing what they found under their pillows. Natasha Evans from Cheshire gave her daughter three one-pound coins and two chocolate coins to share with her sister when she lost her first tooth. However, when her daughter told her classmates about her gifts, they were surprised and said, “The tooth fairy didn’t bring us chocolate coins!”
Ms. Evans plans to stick to giving money going forward and told the children that the tooth fairy doesn’t normally give chocolate coins. It’s not just the tooth fairy that has seen this kind of inflation, as parents are now celebrating more minor milestones in a similar way. Global searches on Pinterest have seen a significant increase for “potty training rewards ideas,” “end-of-year school party ideas,” and “my first tooth party” between September 2021 and August 2023, according to The Wall Street Journal.
