Tree Lighting Ceremony in South Los Angeles to Commemorate Slain Children
LOS ANGELES—An evening dedicated to healing and remembrance will take place in South Los Angeles this Sunday, honoring the memories of children who fell victim to murder.
The ceremony, scheduled for 5 p.m. at the sheriff’s South Los Angeles Station, is organized by Justice For Murdered Children (JFMC) in collaboration with the sheriff’s department.
“Families attending the ceremony will have the chance to hang personalized ornaments on a beautifully illuminated tree as a heartfelt tribute to their loved ones,” JFMC stated.
“The event will also include Christmas caroling, along with hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies to create a warm and supportive ambiance.”
As LaWanda Hawkins, a founding member of JFMC, expressed, “This tree serves as a symbol of remembrance and togetherness. By gathering, we honor the memories of those we’ve lost, while also strengthening our community ties.”
Hawkins co-founded JFMC in 1996.
“LaWanda was driven by the deep sorrow of losing her own son, Reginald, who was murdered in December 1995,” the organization’s website notes.
“Together with other parents from South Central Los Angeles who had experienced similar tragedies, LaWanda acknowledged the alarming truth that their cases frequently remained unsolved and their voices neglected in the criminal justice system. United by a common goal for change, they established JFMC to address this gap, offering support, justice, and a sense of community to families grappling with such immense loss.
“Through their dedicated efforts, JFMC has become a beacon of hope and advocacy for families affected by murder,” the website further explains.
“Our mission is to assist, empower, and educate families, bridge gaps in the criminal justice system, promote victims’ rights, and strive for a future with reduced violence and better support for impacted communities.”
