Donald Trump’s chief trade adviser told a Sky News reporter to “stop that nonsense” while addressing queries about the US president’s tariff policies.

Peter Navarro maintained that Mr. Trump was “negotiating strategically” after Sky’s US correspondent Mark Stone suggested that the president “appears to be changing his position by the hour presently.”

Mr. Trump had announced a 50% tariff increase on Canadian steel and aluminum on Tuesday, only to reverse the decision within hours.

Nonetheless, there are ongoing 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports to the US, which are effective as of today, impacting UK products worth hundreds of millions of pounds.

Mr. Navarro stated: “The policy is ‘no exemptions, no exclusions’ and that will adjust if the president modifies his stance.”

“There is a valid reason for ‘no exemptions, no exclusions’ as a policy—our country has made friendly gestures in the past, and they have been met with ingratitude, which will not be repeated.”

In reply, Stone remarked: “The president indeed seems to change his mind frequently. What do you think about the situation?”

Mr. Navarro responded: “Sir, you aren’t grasping what a negotiation looks like. The president is negotiating with a strategy. So please, cease the rhetoric, alright? Just stop that nonsense.”

Stone said: “But he does appear to be changing his mind constantly…”

Mr. Navarro retorted: “Stop that nonsense. That’s a load of rubbish…”

When Stone stated it was “creating turmoil in the stock markets,” Mr. Navarro replied: “It’s not causing any havoc.”
