Trump and Zelenskyy Exchange Accusations Following US-Russia Discussions
The President of the United States accused the Ukrainian President of persuading the U.S. to engage in an unnecessary and unwinnable conflict with Russia.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have exchanged accusations regarding the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war and the situation of Zelenskyy’s administration nearly three years into the conflict.
In his social media update on Wednesday, Trump remarked that Zelenskyy is struggling with low approval ratings among the Ukrainian populace and labeled the Ukrainian leader as a dictator as the nation continues to delay its standard electoral schedule.
Ideally, Zelenskyy would have been seeking reelection last spring; however, Ukrainian law prohibits elections during periods of martial law. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Kyiv government has perpetually extended its martial law status.
“[Zelenskyy] refuses to hold Elections, has very low approval ratings in Ukraine, and the only thing he’s excelled at is playing [President Joe Biden] ‘like a fiddle’,” Trump remarked. “A dictator without elections, Zelenskyy better act quickly or risk losing his country.”
During remarks at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, the previous day, Trump mentioned that certain polls indicated Zelenskyy’s approval rating could be as low as 4 percent.
On Wednesday, Zelenskyy responded by alleging that Trump was influenced by misinformation and was jeopardizing efforts to diplomatically isolate Russia.
“We have observed this disinformation,” Zelenskyy stated, as reported by the Kyiv Independent. “We recognize that it originates from Russia.”
He also cautioned against efforts to remove him from office amidst the ongoing conflict.
