Trump Appoints Joseph Nocella Jr. as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York
The judge from Nassau County is set to succeed Breon Peace, who was appointed by President Joe Biden in August 2021.
President-elect Donald J. Trump has selected Joseph Nocella Jr. as his nominee for the U.S. attorney position from the Eastern District of New York.
Trump made the announcement a few weeks following the resignation notice of Breon Peace, the current U.S. attorney for the district, who will step down on Jan. 10. Deputy Carolyn Pokorny will take on the role of acting U.S. attorney in the interim.
The selected nominee is a graduate of Columbia Law School and currently serves as a judge in Nassau County. His prior experience includes roles as town attorney for Hempstead and Oyster Bay.
This district encompasses Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, as well as King’s County in Brooklyn, Richmond County on Staten Island, and Queens County. The remaining boroughs of New York City, Manhattan and the Bronx, belong to the Southern District of New York.
The former partner at Cleary Gottlieb led notable prosecutions, including a $4 million Medicare fraud case, which resulted in a guilty plea from pharmacy operator Albert Muratov. Under his leadership, the district also indicted Linda Sun, a former aide to Governor Kathy Hochul, for allegedly serving as an agent of the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party.
Moreover, in August of this year, Peace’s prosecution led to the guilty plea of former Congressman George Santos on charges relating to aggravated identity theft and wire fraud.
Peace also prosecuted a pro-Trump social media influencer, Douglass Mackey, for posts made during the lead-up to the 2016 election. Mackey was convicted of conspiracy against rights in 2023 and received a seven-month jail sentence.
“The defendant utilized disinformation in a perilous scheme aimed at obstructing targeted groups, including Black and brown individuals and women, from participating in our democratic process,” Peace commented following Mackey’s sentencing.
