Donald Trump has announced the withdrawal of the United States from the UN Human Rights Council, warning that Iran will face ‘obliteration’ if it attempts to carry out an assassination against him.
The president has also halted funding for the UN’s relief agency for Gaza.
This executive order signifies a reinstatement of policies from his previous administration.
The Biden administration had previously suspended funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) after allegations surfaced regarding staff involvement in the October 7 attacks.
Trump further claimed that Palestinians have “no choice” but to exit Gaza, although he expressed no outright support for Israelis settling in the area.
Additionally, he reiterated prior notions that he envisions Jordan and Egypt absorbing Palestinians from Gaza.
According to UN estimates, 60% of the structures within the enclave have sustained damage or destruction, with nearly all of the 2.3 million residents of Gaza having been displaced during Israel’s 15-month military conflict, seeking refuge elsewhere in the territory.
Trump’s executive orders and remarks come ahead of his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
In related news, Trump also issued a “tough” directive regarding Iran, citing concerns that Tehran is “too close” to developing a nuclear weapon.
He stated intentions to engage in talks with his Iranian counterpart, but cautioned that he has left “instructions” indicating that if Iran were to assassinate him, the US adversary “would be obliterated.”
