Trump “Upset” Over Zelenskyy’s Casual Attire During White House Visit | World News

Reports indicate that the Ukrainian president received advice to wear a suit for his visit to the White House, which reportedly upset Donald Trump when he chose not to comply.

In preparation for the pivotal meeting, Trump’s team suggested that Volodymyr Zelenskyy swap his customary military-style attire for something more formal, according to Axios.

Instead, he opted for an all-black ensemble, which reportedly irritated Mr. Trump as the meeting spiraled into a disastrous affair, based on accounts from two sources who spoke with Axios.

Given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has claimed countless lives, it appeared that Mr. Zelenskyy’s choice of clothing contributed to a rocky start to the discussion.

As Mr. Trump greeted Mr. Zelenskyy in the West Wing, he remarked, “He is all dressed up today.”

During a tumultuous press conference, reporter Brian Glenn questioned Mr. Zelenskyy about his choice of attire, asking, “Why don’t you wear a suit?” and suggesting a lack of respect for America.

The Ukrainian leader retorted, “I will wear a suit when this war is over. Maybe something akin to yours. Perhaps something of higher quality. Or maybe something less expensive.”

In Ukrainian, the term “kostium” (pronounced ‘costume’) translates to “suit.”

Why doesn’t Zelenskyy wear a suit?

As a leader elected in 2019, Mr. Zelenskyy is frequently seen in olive green sweaters adorned with the Ukrainian trident, paired with combat boots.

This choice serves as a powerful symbol to the world that Ukraine remains entrenched in conflict, showcasing his alliance with the military and those engaging on the front lines.

His casual clothing reminds everyone that Ukraine is an active war zone.

While Mr. Zelenskyy donned suits prior to the warfare, symbolizing his role as a head of state, he has made it clear that he will not revert to such attire until the conflict concludes.

In December, he wore a similar outfit for the Notre Dame cathedral reopening ceremony, as well as during his meetings with then President-elect Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Many users on social media quickly noted that Elon Musk also chose not to wear a suit during his recent Oval Office visit.

Images have circulated showing Winston Churchill during WWII, visiting the White House dressed in a wartime “siren suit.”

Churchill donned the one-piece outfit during a meeting with President Franklin D. Roosevelt, with the hopes of persuading the American public to join the war effort.

Interestingly, a bust of Churchill was present in the room during the encounter between Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelenskyy, which concluded with the Ukrainian leader leaving the White House without finalizing the minerals deal he had traveled 5,000 miles to secure.

Mr. Zelenskyy is set to visit the UK next for a summit with European leaders on Sunday.
