Trump’s Arrival Brings Anticipation to the Nuclear Energy World
Insiders are discussing various topics related to nuclear energy, such as fuel vulnerabilities, proliferation risks, thorium, and the potential costs and benefits associated with DOGE.
America’s nuclear energy industry stands out for its bipartisan support.
Maria Korsnick, President and CEO of the Nuclear Energy Institute, highlighted that “Nuclear energy is one of the few issues that receives bipartisan support across the country,” in a statement to The Epoch Times.
Both Democrat-aligned billionaires like Bill Gates and Republican-aligned billionaires like John Catsimatidis have heavily invested in advanced nuclear technologies. Opposition to nuclear power from the left has waned in the United States, with environmentalists increasingly viewing it as a viable source of carbon-free baseload power.
Physicist James Walker, CEO of Nano Nuclear Energy Inc., pointed out the bipartisan support for the ADVANCE Act of 2024, which is crucial for new reactor technologies. The Act was heavily supported by both Republicans and Democrats in Congress and signifies a pro-nuclear stance from the outgoing administration and the Democrat-led Senate.
There are hopes that the new administration will accelerate domestic production of high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU), a fuel used in advanced nuclear reactors. Moves have already been made to reduce reliance on Russian imports of uranium.
The Department of Energy has awarded contracts to six companies for HALEU production, signaling a shift away from Russian supplies.
‘We Need to Revolutionize How We Think’
Trump’s vision for the National Energy Council and the DOE could reshape the country’s energy landscape, with a focus on achieving American energy dominance.
Some experts express concerns about the ease of weaponizing HALEU and the increasing risks of nuclear conflict in today’s geopolitical landscape. Efforts are underway to ramp up the production of domestic fuel sources for advanced nuclear reactors.
