Trump’s Defense Secretary Nominee Pete Hegseth Criticized for ‘Lack of Competence’ During Senate Confirmation Hearing | US News
Donald Trump’s nominee for US defense secretary has faced accusations of being unqualified during a Senate confirmation hearing that was interrupted multiple times.
Lawmakers are assessing whether Pete Hegseth, a former combat veteran and television personality, is suitable to lead the US military as Trump’s selected defense secretary.
His selection has sparked controversy due to previous statements and incidents, including claims of sexual misconduct, heavy drinking, and negative remarks about women in combat and minorities.
During the hearing, which has been disrupted three times by public members, Republican Senator Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, remarked: “Mr. Hegseth has acknowledged falling short, as we all do from time to time.”
He continued, “I have no doubt Mr. Hegseth will excel in a skill where many of his predecessors have struggled.”
In contrast, Jack Reed, the leading Democrat on the committee, stated to Mr. Hegseth: “I do not think you are equipped to handle the immense challenges of this role.”
“Regrettably, you lack the character, poise, and competence necessary for the position of defense secretary.”
