Two children killed in Michigan after alleged drunk driver slams into birthday party, US News reports
Tragedy struck at a birthday party in the US as two children lost their lives and 15 others were injured in a devastating crash caused by a suspected drunk driver at a boat club in Berlin Township, Michigan, on Saturday. The siblings who perished in the incident were a 5-year-old brother and his 8-year-old sister.
Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough reported that the scene was incredibly chaotic, marked by intense emotions among those involved and witnesses to the horrific event. Several individuals suffered severe injuries, with three children and six adults airlifted or transported by ambulance to hospitals, some with life-threatening conditions.
Other injured individuals received immediate first aid on-site, while some were driven to hospitals in private vehicles. The perpetrator, a 66-year-old woman, crashed her vehicle into the building, traveling 25 feet inside.
The tragic incident unfolded around 3 pm at the Swan Creek Boat Club, located in Berlin Township, approximately 30 miles south of Detroit. A statement released by the club acknowledged the accident and urged prayers for the affected individuals and their families. As a result of the tragedy, the club announced its closure on April 21.
The woman, who remains unnamed, was apprehended and is suspected of driving while intoxicated, leading to fatalities. She is currently in custody at the Monroe County Jail and is cooperating with law enforcement. Additional charges may be brought against her as the investigation progresses.
Authorities were made aware of the woman’s potential presence at a nearby tavern before the tragic event. They subsequently shut down the establishment and intend to search it as part of their ongoing investigation.
