Two Juveniles Taken into Custody for Suspected Role in Assault on Motorist

LOS ANGELES—Authorities reported on Feb. 28 that two juveniles were apprehended for their alleged role in the assault of a motorist by a group of 20 to 30 teenagers on bicycles in broad daylight in the Carthay area of Los Angeles.

The arrests were made following an anonymous tip after the incident became public, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

The juveniles are facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon, as stated by Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky. Their identities have not been disclosed due to their age.

The incident took place around 5 p.m. on Saturday near the intersection of San Vicente Boulevard and Carrillo Drive, as indicated by an LAPD announcement.

The LAPD reported that the assault—which was captured on cellphone video—occurred around 5 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of San Vicente Boulevard and Carrillo Drive.

Authorities revealed that a confrontation occurred between the victim and a group of approximately 20 to 30 cyclists aged between 16 and 18.

Police reported that after some members of the group hit the victim’s vehicle, the victim exited the car to confront them. “A physical altercation ensued, resulting in more suspects getting involved,” the police stated.

Surrounded by the attackers, the victim was quickly overpowered and subjected to punches and kicks while on the ground. The assault came to a halt when several bystanders intervened, prompting the suspects to flee the scene on their bicycles, heading south on Carillo Drive.

As witnesses approached to help, the suspects escaped from the scene together on their bicycles, according to law enforcement.

Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived at the scene to treat the victim for minor injuries received during the assault. The victim, however, declined further treatment at a hospital.

Investigators are continuing their inquiries and are looking for more suspects. Anyone with further details about the assault or the whereabouts of the suspects is encouraged to contact Detective Carlos at the Wilshire Area at 213-922-8229.
