Two Officers Wounded and Suspect Fatally Shot in Atlanta Area Gunfight
SOUTH FULTON, Ga.—On Friday, two police officers sustained injuries and a suspect was killed during a shootout just south of Atlanta.
Shortly before noon, officers from Fulton County noticed an individual jaywalking near a motel and called for backup, according to police reports. Lt. Charles Cook from the South Fulton Police Department responded to the scene, and as soon as he exited his vehicle, the suspect opened fire, as explained by South Fulton Police Chief Keith Meadows during a press conference.
At least one officer returned fire, resulting in the suspect being fatally shot, although it remains unclear which officer discharged the weapon that killed him, Meadows stated.
Lt. Cook was struck by gunfire three times and is currently in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, as reported by Meadows. Another Fulton County police officer, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, suffered minor injuries.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been summoned to investigate the incident, which is standard protocol for cases involving police shootings.
