Project 2025, a conservative “blueprint” for a second Donald Trump presidency, has taken center stage in the run up to the US election.

Democrats are using it as a political weapon, while the former president is trying to distance himself from the project.

The 922-page manifesto, created by the influential think tank, the Heritage Foundation, with collaboration from over 100 other conservative groups, aims to reshape the federal government and turn the US into a “Christian nationalist state.”

What’s included in the plan?

It suggests reconfiguring federal bureaucracy by establishing a LinkedIn-style database, hiring 50,000 “loyal” appointees through the revival of “Schedule F,” an executive order initially signed by Trump in 2020. This order would grant the president unprecedented control over federal employees to create a “new army of aligned, trained, and weaponized conservatives ready to combat the Deep State.”

The proposals also involve dismantling key agencies like the Departments of Education, Homeland Security, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the FBI. Additionally, it aims to roll back LGBTQ+ rights and climate protections, ban pornography, certain books, and the teaching of “critical race theory” in schools, prohibit abortion as healthcare, and execute the largest deportation effort in US history.

What are Democrats expressing?

It has been labeled as “dystopian” and “authoritarian” and has become a rallying cry for them to caution undecided voters about the potential consequences before the 2024 US presidential election in November.

How has it gained popularity in popular culture?

Comedians John Oliver and Stephen Colbert dedicated entire episodes to it, dissecting the most alarming aspects of the project, and garnering millions of views. Celebrities like actress Taraji P. Henson and actor Mark Ruffalo have alerted the public to what they perceive as the dangers of Project 2025. It has also become a hot topic on TikTok.

Is Trump really endorsing it?

Initially, Donald Trump denied any knowledge of the proposals and then completely disassociated himself from them. However, at least 140 people who worked for him are connected to the project, and the former president and his running mate, JD Vance, have previously praised Heritage for its policy work.

So, is it fading away?

No. The Democrats have made it a primary attack on Trump – it was the focal point of their national convention, and they seem determined to continue using it.
