US Claims to Have Eliminated Islamic State Leader Abu Yusif in Airstrike in Syria | Global News
The United States has announced the elimination of Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Yusif in Syria.
US Central Command (Centcom) confirmed that an airstrike was executed to target Yusif—also known as Mahmud—within the eastern region of the country.
According to US officials, another member of IS was also eliminated during this operation.
This airstrike took place in an area that was previously under the control of the Syrian regime and Russian forces.
General Michael Erik Kurilla, the commander of Centcom, stated: “As previously mentioned, the United States, in collaboration with allies and partners in the region, will not permit ISIS to exploit the ongoing situation in Syria to rebuild its forces.”
“ISIS aims to liberate the over 8,000 operatives currently detained in facilities across Syria.”
“We will actively target these leaders and operatives, including those attempting to conduct operations beyond Syria’s borders.”
