US Couple Killed While Visiting Western Mexico

MEXICO CITY—A couple from the U.S. was tragically shot and killed in the violence-stricken state of Michoacan, Mexico, according to state prosecutors on Thursday. This incident occurred right after the country’s president concluded a meeting with security officials that was focused on combating a wave of violence.

The victims were identified as Gloria A., 50, and Rafael C., 53. They were traveling in a pickup truck in Angamacutiro when the shooting took place on Wednesday night, as stated by the Michoacan attorney general’s office.

While Gloria died at the scene, Rafael succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward at a hospital, according to the statement. The motive behind the targeting of the married couple remains unclear, and investigations are currently underway.

A spokesperson indicated that Gloria had obtained U.S. citizenship, while Rafael was born in the U.S. to Mexican parents. The couple had family ties and a residence in Angamacutiro.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who assumed office in October, has pledged to replicate her successful crime reduction strategies from her time as mayor of Mexico City on a national scale.

However, her initial months in office have been marked by a spike in cartel violence across various regions.
