The US election is not just about the popular vote, but also about winning the key states.

How does the US election work?

If we tally up the votes in “safe” states, Harris has 225 electoral college votes and Trump has 219, in their race to 270.

With 94 votes remaining in the swing states, Harris needs 45 to secure the presidency while Trump needs 51. Harris is currently ahead in more of these crucial states.

Although the leads are slim, within the margin of error, Harris could win by holding onto her current lead in key states and securing one of the tied states. Trump, on the other hand, would need to win both tied states and the ones where he is leading.

In the betting odds, Trump and Harris have been in a close contest with Trump recently taking a significant lead.

The percentage indicates the overall chance of winning for the candidates, not the vote share or electoral college distribution.

Battleground states

Many states are already leaning towards a particular party. For example, California and New York have consistently voted Democrat, while Texas has favored Republicans.

Thus, the focus is on the critical swing states that could go either way.

If Trump fails to win Pennsylvania, his path to victory becomes narrow, needing to secure at least four of the remaining six major states.

However, if he wins Pennsylvania, he could become president by winning just two other states.

One electoral vote in Nebraska 2nd could tip the balance under certain scenarios.

If Trump wins Pennsylvania and Michigan and maintains other results from 2020, he would reach 269 votes – Nebraska 2nd would be decisive in this case.

What happens if it’s a tie in the electoral college?
