US Launches Investigation into More than 110,000 Ford SUVs Due to Seat Belt Worries
The U.S. auto safety regulator announced on Monday that approximately 112,567 Ford SUVs are being investigated for issues with their seat belt retractors.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received three complaints regarding unintended deployment of the seat belt retractor pretensioner. The complaints described a loud sound followed by the seat belt rapidly tightening and remaining locked, the agency added.
Ford stated that they are cooperating with the NHTSA in their investigation, focusing on Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models from 2019–2020.
Additionally, the NHTSA has launched a separate investigation into Ford, covering 456,565 vehicles for loss of motive power and electrical system failures. This investigation targets Ford’s Bronco Sport crossover SUVs and Maverick pickup trucks from 2021–2024.
Last week, the NHTSA reported that Ford agreed to a $165 million civil penalty following an investigation that revealed the automaker did not promptly recall vehicles with faulty rearview cameras.
This penalty was a result of a 2020 investigation into Ford’s recall of 620,246 vehicles for rear camera issues. The regulator questioned whether Ford had efficiently recalled these vehicles. In 2022 and March 2023, Ford expanded the recall to include about 24,000 more vehicles.
